Sodium metabisulfite [SMBS] is the typical chlorine reducing agent of choice for larger RO systems.

Preferred to be used for larger water treatment systems than other chemical reducing agents such as carbon filters, due to its advantage of reducing the chance of bacteria growth than produces biological fouling.

Will reduce damage to membranes, used in Reverse Osmosis desalination from exposure to oxidants such as chlorine.

Alkaline pH conditions accelerate chlorine attack and at the same time acidic pH offers a better biocidal effect during chlorination.

Typically, RO membranes will suffer irreversible damages after an exposure to 1mg/L of free chlorine for 100 hours. Higher Chlorine concentrations will reduce this time to just a few hours.

Keep away from heat and direct sunlight as the potential for release of sulphur dioxide
fumes exists. Protect solutions from freezing.
Sodium metabisulphite liquid has very low toxicity but routine safety precautions should be
practiced. Rubber gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing is recommended.

Apply a dose rate of 3.7ml/m3 of solution for each 1ppm of free chlorine in the water to be
treated. Use a suitable free chlorine test kit to monitor reduction in free chlorine levels. For
continuous applications, a suitable storage tank and chemical dosing pump should be used.
